Inside an Integrated ATPL Journey: what it really takes to become an airline pilot

Aerodynamics Academy

This week has been an important one at Aerodynamics Academy.

Several of our ATPL students have officially completed their theoretical examinations, closing one of the most demanding stages of integrated pilot training.

And while from the outside it may look like “just exams”, within the aviation world it means much more than that.

It represents months of classes, studying, pressure, discipline and an enormous amount of effort behind every single subject passed.

Because before sitting in an airline cockpit, every pilot goes through this stage first.

What exactly is ATPL theory?

ATPL theory (Airline Transport Pilot Licence) is the academic phase of commercial pilot training under EASA regulations.

This is the stage where students develop the technical knowledge required to operate aircraft safely and professionally, following the European standards used by airlines and flight schools across Europe.

And no, we are definitely not talking about “just a few exams”.

How many subjects are included in an Integrated ATPL?

The ATPL theoretical phase is made up of 13 official EASA subjects, alongside the KSA (Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes) programme, which is currently integrated into the theoretical training syllabus.

These subjects cover almost every area of professional aviation:

  • Air Law
  • Aircraft General Knowledge
  • Instrumentation
  • Mass & Balance
  • Performance
  • Flight Planning & Monitoring
  • Human Performance
  • Meteorology
  • General Navigation
  • Radio Navigation
  • Operational Procedures
  • Principles of Flight
  • Communications

Each subject includes its own official EASA examination, completed digitally under European aviation standards.

If you would like to explore the 13 official EASA ATPL subjects in more detail, there are specialised resources explaining the content of each area individually.

Much more than memorising information

One of the things that surprises most students when starting ATPL training is the level of technical depth involved.

Students are not simply studying theory.

They are learning to think like future professional pilots.

Meteorology, navigation, operational procedures, flight planning, aircraft systems, human performance and aviation regulations are just some of the areas included throughout the training process.

At the same time, they also develop something even more important: discipline, decision-making skills and an operational mindset.

The meaning behind the stripes

The meaning behind the stripes

At Aerodynamics Academy, completing this phase also carries a symbolic meaning within the training journey.

After successfully completing the ATPL theoretical phase, our students replace their single stripe — earned after their first solo flight — with two stripes alongside the CTKI and their theoretical instructors, marking an important milestone in their commercial pilot training journey.

It may seem like a small detail, but for them it represents much more than that.

It reflects the hours of studying, the pressure of the exams, the consistency and the commitment required to reach this point.

It marks the end of one stage and the beginning of the next in their journey towards becoming airline pilots.

What happens after completing ATPL theory?

Once the theoretical phase is completed, students move into a stage focused even more closely on operational flying and real-world airline preparation.

Students continue progressing in areas such as:

  • Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) flying
  • advanced navigation
  • multi-engine training
  • simulators
  • operational procedures
  • airline-oriented preparation

This is the stage where everything learned during theory starts transferring more directly into real flight operations.

Because becoming an airline pilot does not happen overnight.

It happens step by step, subject by subject and flight by flight.

And this week, our students have completed one of the most important steps of that journey.
